Springwell signal cabin
The signalling system with facing point locks and electric interlocking for the rope haulage release was required before passenger services could start.
Requiring Ancient Monument consent, this structure started life as a ground frame with a small floored area and handrails. Not long after construction a canopy was added to give some shelter from the elements for both the staff and equipment. Later the sides were enclosed and a door added to provide security to the signalling equipment inside. A small veranda was provided to enable the signalman to hand the One Engine in Steam (OES) Staff to the loco driver as the engine passed the box. In the early days however the signalman had collect the staff from the frame and cross the line using a barrow style crossing before handing the staff to the fireman of the loco.
