Water tower at Springwell

Erected in 1979/80, it provides water for our steam locomotives. Prior to this, a hose was used. The tank and the water crane to which it feeds the water required ancient monument consent for installation. The water crane came from Tynemouth station, along with much of our point locking equipment, during the construction of the Metro.

The construction of the tower and tank was not without problems - during the initial stages of construction a hole was dug for a concrete plinth to support the weight of the tank, water and frame. It was discovered that the 1920s extension of the Tub Shop was without foundations and the gable end of the building collapsed, complicating the work somewhat.
