Kip and Dish at Springwell
(Sadly, when not in use, steel shutters are necessary because of vandalism)
Named after the hump on the line (kip) where to rope is released from moving wagons, and the hole or hollow (dish) where wagons were allowed to roll into to come to a stand, this building was constructed at the start of the preservation of the railway as Ticket Office, shop, refreshment and toilet block for visitors on open days. Ancient monument consent was required for the construction of this building.
The steel frame for this brick building was donated to the railway. Prior to its construction, refreshments were served in the Tub Shop, and the Ticket Office was located in what has become a ladies toilet next to the site office, and also for a time in the small office next to the first aid room by the platform.
The location is not the one first chosen as, during the early days of preservation when the visitor access was via the level crossing entrance, it was proposed to erect a building next to the site wall in the area of the site office and next to the then Ticket Office.
