Brake cabin at Springwell
This building was used to control the speed of the wagons on the Springwell incline. Resembling a traditional signal box shape, the building contained a large horizontal wheel mounted on a pedestal. This wheel was used to control the speed of wagons on the incline by applying the brake on the return wheel located in the pit nearby. Windows on the South and East sides of the building enabled to Brakeman to see the bank head and most of the incline to Springwell bank foot.
In addition to this the building housed signal bells for the incline as well as the telephone switchboard for Springwell.
The brake cabin and its operation feature in the film "Bowes Line" made shortly before closure.
