Wagons: The "A" Series

 Wagon No B49

The origin of the "B" wagons has long been thought to be because they were called Bogies, (a local name for a small four wheeled wagon.). However evidence has been found of the "A" wagons. These wagons were built by Watts, Hardy & Co. They were a convertible coke wagon. These wagons were similar in size to a Half High, but with an additional two wooden rails which were fixed to the inside of the body. The fixing points for the rails were by triangular brackets at the four corners of the wagon floor.

One of the preserved Half Highs, No B49, has the triangular brackets associated with this type of wagon, and also the partial remains of a Watts Hardy builders plate on its frame. It is possible that this wagon is a survivor of the "A" wagons, and that the "B" wagons are not bogies but were a series of wagons that followed on from the "A" wagons.
