Bowes 'Stripey' Wagon No 1289
Stripes (pronounced "Stripeys") are ex North Eastern Railway origin. The name comes from the white stripe that was painted on the side to show they were for coal traffic only on the N.E.R.
These wagons fall into three types - Bowes, Pelaw Main and Derwenthaugh. The type of Stripes wagon indicate where it was purchased for originally. The colliery lines in the area often exchanged wagons. Some of these wagons have the remains of NER end brakes as opposed to the standard side brake used on the railway. The wagon numbers preserved fall between 1104 and 1289.
