Wagons: "Ordinaries"

Wagon No 364

The majority of wagons preserved on the railway are of the type called Ordinaries. This wagon type was built from the turn of the twentieth century at the Springwell workshops. These wagons were built to replace the Black Wagons - a type of Chaldron Wagon. About 800 Ordinary wagons were built in the open at Springwell. It is known that some of the parts were brought in for the wagons' construction, e.g. wheels, buffers etc.

These wagons were used as the basic design of all hopper wagons on the railway. The coal was loaded in the top and was released by opening four doors on the underside of the wagon. A peculiar feature of these wagons are the Batter Plates on the sides of the wagon. These plates were attached to the sides of the wagon so that they could be hit to dislodge wet coal without damaging the side planks.
