Wagons: "Jubilees"

Wagon No 197 residing in the head shunt outside the lower end of the Wagon Shop at Springwell, awaiting restoration

Following the original 1887 order for wagons from Darlington Wagon & Engineering Company Ltd (see: 'Iron Framed Wagons'), a second batch of 100 wagons was ordered from that company in 1897. These wagons, of which only three now remain (Nos 197, 202 and 210), were known as Jubilees, as 1897 was the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. The wagons differed from the earlier batch as the frame was made of wood rather than iron and they were also almost 2' 6" (0.76m) longer than the original iron framed wagons.
