Bowes Railway has the largest collection of preserved industrial wagons in the country.

We have a varied collection of rolling stock which was used on the railway. There are over seventy wagons of various types, the majority being 10-ton wooden hopper wagons, mostly built before 1914. They are used for rope haulage demonstrations and railway engineering works.

There are also some wagons of special interest from other local colliery railway systems.

The oldest wagon on the railway is No 122, a survivor of a batch of one hundred iron framed wagons built in 1887 by the Darlington Wagon & Engineering Co. Ltd for the railway. Because of the iron frame, these wagons were often converted for other uses like our Reel Wagon which is used to assist with the supply of new ropes to the haulage engine.

The nature of the line and its historic status does not allow passenger "carriages", (they would look out of place anyway). So for passenger services we operate Brake Vans and an open wagon converted for passenger use.
