Brake Van No 1

Brake Van No.1

This van was built in 1933 at the Philadelphia works of Lambton Hetton & Joicey Collieries for use on the Lambton Railway, which ran over LNER lines to ship coal at Sunderland. It was numbered 1 and weighed 9 tons 11 cwts. It was transferred to the Harton system at Westoe Colliery, South Shields in 1968 where it was rebuilt to its present condition, its height being reduced by 18 inches (45 cm) to allow proper clearance below the overhead electric wires. Following its purchase from the NCB's Harton Railway in South Shields, it arrived at Springwell on 11 March 1977.
