Welcome to the Bowes Railway Website
We are the only operational preserved standard gauge rope-hauled railway in the world. Our Springwell site is open Monday to Saturday throughout the year. Trains operate on selected Sundays and special days as advertised.
Our Springwell site is normally open for viewing Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
If you are travelling some distance to visit us, please ring 0191 4161847 to confirm if we are open.
Our resident steam and diesel locos, historic wagon collection, mining displays, underground loco collection, and engineering workshops can be seen. Guided tours are also available.

We have an Operating Day on Sunday 3rd March 2013. Steam-hauled passenger trains, guided tours, mining exhibitions open, and refreshments available. Site open 10am to 4pm. Full details on our blog - Click Here
UPDATE 10 September 2012:
We now have our own blog - bowesrailway.blogspot.co.uk. It is updated regularly with all of our latest news and photographs.
The whole railway, including the buildings, machinery and rolling stock is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is managed by the Bowes Railway Company Ltd. (Registered Charity Number 511961) on behalf of the current owners, Sunderland City Council and Gateshead Council.
