Welcome to the Bowes Railway Website
We are the only operational preserved standard gauge rope-hauled railway in the world. Our Springwell site is open Monday to Saturday throughout the year. Trains operate on selected Sundays and special days as advertised. IMPORTANT NOTICE:Railway operations are limited at the moment due to essential repair works being scheduled on the Springwell level crossing which is due to start shortly. Anyone travelling any distance to visit the Springwell site should call 0191 4161847 for an update on the situation. Next Event:26th/27th May : Steam and Vintage Rally. More info available shortly.
The whole railway, including the buildings, machinery and rolling stock is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is managed by the Bowes Railway Company Ltd. (Registered Charity Number 511961) on behalf of the current owners, Sunderland City Council and Gateshead Council.
